Sills Aviation Services is teaming up with AirborneKustomz to paint
and assemble this Van's RV8 for Mike Hundley of Austin TX.
Above is the artist rendering that the owner liked and we agreed to do.
The airplanes fuselage and tail surfaces had received a paint job that was
not up to standards to say the least so I was approached and asked if I could help out.
UGLY !
We took off all the paint and started from scratch. The fiberglass needed
alot of work to make smooth and pin hole free.
Cowling smoothed and coated with 2K surfacer.
Fuselage cleaned , acid etched and alodine applied.
Slick !
Check for fit .
Left wing in primer.
Right wing in fixture , other parts after alodine was applied ready for primer.
Canopy ready for another coat of primer on the skirt.
Right wing in primer and ready for sanding.
Zolotone greystone applied to inside of engine cowlings.
Paint masks applied and stripes masked off.
All colors are on and masks are removed.
John McFarling of AirbornKustomz has joined our team and is pulling
off the paint masks and inspecting his work.
Ready for the clear coat.
Clear coat applied . Now let it dry and go get the other one.
Tail group and spinner in clear coat.
Other wing group in clear and ready to install.
Fuselage & canopy ready for another touch of primer , then come
the colors.
White applied first so we don't have to use a lot of yellow to get it
to cover well.

Star & Bar first , then white went down and then the black.
The unmasking !
We got this far by 10:30 pm . Tomorrow it will get the clear coat. My butt
is dragging!
Four coats of clear , let it dry to dust free and pull the tapes and paper.
After we got it painted I was asked if we could assist in finishing
the build, SO ! Tomorrow we start assembly ! Yeah !
Canopy sitting on for looks but the tail group is bolted on and hooked up
Lights installed in wing tips and lense covers on.
Micah Slack has joined our team and is cleaning out the interior so we can
prep for paint.
Completed fabrication and installation of cooling plenum.
Wings and wing tips installed !
Carburator air box assembled , painted and installed.
Roll out into the sun for a look.
Wheel and gear leg fairings still to be completed.
Interior painted and most upholstery installed.
Almost finished !
